The world's oldest known art of healing, aromatherapy, has been used by millions of doctors over millions of patients for thousands of years. Pharmacist Sinem Us Tokoğlu talks about the healing power of aromatherapy and how we can benefit from it.

For centuries, human beings know that essential oils have an intense and profound healing effect on the mind and soul. The first people observed that essential oils in herbs and spices protect food, heal sick people, and when they accidentally set some plants on fire, they found aromatic fumes (essential oil) that improved mind and mood. They used the shells and resins of these plants in religious rituals and purification ceremonies. We know that the Egyptians also benefited from the papyrus records dating back to 4500 BC, the essential oils of aromatic plants in the art of embalming and curing diseases.

Sinem Us Tokoğlu, who was enchanted with the smell of spices in his travels to the Far East with his family as a child, made love of nature to herbal science interested in healing art. Pharmacy studied and aromatherapy
has received numerous training in the field. Influenced by both his grandmother's and his father's surgeon's interest in oils, Tokoğlu tells the secrets of plant science for thousands of years.
Where does the healing power of essential oils come from?

Everything in nature vibrates. Scientific studies have shown that essential oils emit high energy. Especially the highest energy of rosewood is 320 MHz. These essential oils interact with odor and have the power to directly affect our brain and the whole body.

A single essential oil consists of more than 150 phytochemicals that act synergistically to produce various effects in the body. This may explain that a single essential oil can help many symptoms. For example, peppermint oil; It can be used as antibacterial, analgesic, local anesthetic, nausea, spasm solvent. Because each essential oil contains aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, esters, terpenes and many healing phytochemicals. These are divided into dozens of different components.

The most effective way of applying aromatherapy is by recognizing odor molecules through odor receptors and directing them to the cerebral cortex and limbic system in the brain. This is effective in situations such as emotions, instinctive behaviors, motivation, sleep, sexual impulses, learning and revitalization of the human body. Another way is epithelial tissue. In other words, it is carried directly to the liver by penetrating directly through the skin, nasal region, alveoli, stomach, intestine into the lymph system and capillaries. They interfere with the blood circulation and are thrown away without accumulating in the body by completing the healing task of the related tissues.
What should I pay attention to when buying and using oils? Are there common mistakes in the use of oils?

We must remember that oils must meet certain criteria. If it does not meet the criteria, unfortunately, these oils do not show drug effect, only used as cosmetic oil. You should get pharmaceutical-effective oils from pharmacies in consultation with your pharmacist. In the market, especially expensive almonds, roses, jasmine, balm, such as oils, cheaper than other oils are adulterated with synthetic scents and other substances are added. The results of the analysis show us that the oils taken from outside because they are cheap are not pure and natural, and even because they contain synthetic substances instead of healing, they can have the opposite effect on human health. Since essential oils are very strong, most of them, except some, such as lavender and tea tree, cannot be applied directly and should be diluted with a fixed oil. For allergic bodies, it should first be applied to the inner surface of the arm. After waiting for 15 minutes, it should be applied to the body if no irritation occurs.

Because they are volatile, we should close their covers well after use and keep them in a cool place away from heat.
Can we make aromatherapy a part of our daily lives?

I wish everyone had medicine cabinets beside the oil cabinets; In our daily lives, we make use of these oils so much… We can make an oil list that should be in every house:

Eucalyptus, mint, nioli, laurel, lemon peel oil for bacteria, virus repellent, cold and flu, nose opener, sinusitis, toe and nail fungus.
Lavender oil for stress, sleep, mild burns at home, fly bites.
Tea tree oil for aphthae, acne, throat infection and antiseptic.
Frankincense oil for sudden shock and trauma, slowing the heartbeat, breathing blockage, sedative, antibacterial, wrinkles, sores, tracks and dry skin.
Fly repellent for babies and children, relaxing pelargonium oil with pleasant smell for acne and oily skin care

These can help in your practical life as an aromatherapy kit.
How can we benefit from aromatherapy in psychological disorders?

Our mind is a filter of all our past experiences. We create problems in our minds, and meditations and breathing techniques aim to relax the mind and regulate the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal cortex cycle, the HPA axis. In this way, biological regulators such as dopamine, gaba, serotonin, melatonin and acetylcholine are secreted. In this regard, by getting support from essential oils, we can regulate the HPA axis and benefit from aromatherapy in the relaxation cycle of our body, soul and mind.
