WHAT IS EAR WASTE? WHY DO I HAVE IT?
Earwax (known as seren in the tube) is a natural secretion produced by our body. In fact, it is not dirt in the sense that its name suggests, and it has no direct relation to cleanliness or meticulousness. The word “dirt deki in our Turkish language is confusing, in English its meaning is“ Earwax ”and“ ear candle mesela.
The plug is actually part of our external ear skin's self-cleaning system. It consists of a mixture of secretions of sweat and sebaceous glands in the ear skin, along with the old superficial skin layers that have expired and poured into the ear canal. It forms a protective layer towards the outer part of the ear canal and prevents the foreign substances from escaping inwards, and also prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi with the substances it contains.
Normally, the ear canal thrown out in very small pieces by the migration of the skin from the inside of the ear canal and the jaw movements is present in every human being and does not cause any problems. Natural cleaning and self-cleaning earwax does not require any cleaning process and intervention.
In some people, there is an overproduction of earwax or a defect in the self-cleaning mechanism. The reason for this has not been fully explained. According to the data of the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology, 10% of children and 5% of adults have this problem. In elderly people, this rate increases significantly.
In this case, excessive amounts of earwax can obstruct the outer ear canal and cause various symptoms. Complaints such as hearing loss, pain and fullness in the ear and hum are the most common complaints. Occasionally, a dry cough without cause, slight dizziness, such as complaints may be one of the underlying factors earwax. Occasionally, clogged ears may come into contact with water after swiming, showering, and begin to show symptoms suddenly.

It should be kept in mind that such findings can be seen in many other serious ear diseases in addition to the accumulation of earwax, and a doctor should be examined in case of such complaints.
Inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal is not the right approach. Although some dirt appears to have been removed at the tip of the cotton, most of it is actually pushed inwards. There is also a high risk of damaging the outer ear canal and eardrum.
Various methods are used to remove earwax. Dried hard soils can be removed with curved metal instruments called curettes. Softer soils can be removed with aspirator or warm water and a special syringe. If the dirt is too large and completely obstructs the duct, a few days of softening drops may be required.
Although earwax is not seen as an important health problem, it is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss. As this condition tends to recur continuously, dirt will accumulate again periodically and cause repeated symptoms. In other words, the fact that it is cleaned once in the wrong way is not the reason for the repetitions. Although there is no known precaution, the use of emollient ear drops at regular intervals may slightly prolong the time until re-occlusion.
