Female genital tract; open to the external environment, affected by hormones, sexually transmitted diseases is almost an entrance gate. The tissue covering the vagina and the microorganisms it contains vary in every period of female life. Especially after adolescence and reproductive age, vaginal structure is under the effect of female hormone called estrogen and contains beneficial microbes called lactobacilli. This disrupts the environment; hormonal effects (menopause, pregnancy, etc.), vaginal douche, sexual intercourse, antibiotic use and even stress facilitate the emergence of genital infections called vaginitis.

Vaginal discharge caused by hormones in a healthy woman is clear, odorless, white in color. The appearance, consistency and smell of the current may vary during the changing days of the menstrual period. Some women may have enough discharge to require regular pet use. These are normal currents and not every discharge is an infection.

When does abnormal vaginal discharge occur?

In infections that cause vaginitis, the discharge is abnormally smelly and causes complaints such as burning and itching.

Common causes of abnormal vaginal discharge are as follows;

Menopause process
Fungal infections caused by antibiotic use or diabetes (diabetes)
Parasitic infections (trichomoniasis) with no condoms
Fungal infections

Fungus (candida) is a type of opportunistic infection that exists in the woman's vaginal flora. The moist environment of the vagina provides the basis for fungal infections. Pregnancy, birth control pills, the use of antibiotics for various reasons and uncontrolled diabetes (diabetes) pave the way for the formation of fungal infection.

In fungal infection, the discharge is consistency of cut milk. With it, serious itching and burning occurs. When urinating, the complaint of burning increases in the area where the urine touches. Contrary to common belief, candida infection is not transmitted by sexual intercourse.

In the treatment of fungal infections; antifungals, antibiotics or flora regulators. Fungal infections are now successfully treated with single dose therapies. In the case of frequent recurrent infections, it is recommended that this treatment be repeated in every menstrual period, although there are no complaints. The treatment may last for 3-6 months depending on the frequency of repetition. Vaginal or local creams, tablets or suppositories may be used for effective and immediate relief of local burning and pruritus.

Fungal infections can be frequently repeated in some women and seriously impair the quality of life. Therefore, in such cases, possible risk factors should be examined well (diabetes, thyroid disorders, immune system diseases, obesity, menopause, pregnancy, etc.), causes should be tried to be eliminated, lifestyle and habits should be changed. Since the fungal infection is not sexually transmitted, the spouse does not need treatment.

Trichomoniasis

trichomoniasis; It is in the class of sexually transmitted diseases caused by a parasite called ich trichomonas ”.

It is frequently seen in women who frequently change partners and are not protected by a condom during intercourse. The discharge is abundant and foamy. Differential diagnosis can be made easily during gynecological examination.

Complaints typically increase after menstruation, causing bladder mouth to burn in the urine. It does not tend to increase with menopause.

Various antiprotozoal tablets and vaginal suppositories are recommended for use with the spouse. The use of condoms is recommended.

Bacterial vaginosis

The discharge caused by bacterial vaginosis is yellow, gray and smelly. This smell is often likened to stale fish. Infection during pregnancy is associated with preterm birth. Although gynecological examination is easily recognized by the color of smell and discharge, sometimes vaginal culture can be performed for differential diagnosis. In the treatment, antibiotic tablets or vaginal suppositories are given against the active microoranism. Co-treatment is recommended.

Fungal infections, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis are the three main causes of vaginitis. Apart from these, many other bacteria, viruses and parasites can cause vaginitis. In the presence of foreign bodies in the vagina, malodorous and abundant discharge can be observed.

What personal precautions can be taken against vaginitis?

Vaginal douching is not recommended because it disrupts normal vaginal flora.

The use of condoms during intercourse, parasitic infections and sexually transmitted diseases to prevent not only menopause, is a method of protection that should be paid attention to the whole woman's sexual life.

Feminine hygiene products, detergents, synthetic underwear, itching and discharge may cause. Wearing cotton undergarments, washing undergarments with granular soap, and not using products thought to cause irritation will be beneficial.

These infections are not transmitted from the toilet as long as hygiene rules are followed. Washing of hands and cleaning after toilet is enough from front to back.
