WHAT IS EYE INFECTION?
It can be transmitted to your eyes from bacteria, fungi or viruses. Eye infections can occur in different parts of the eye and affect only one eye or both. Two common types of eye infections:
Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by an infection. It is frequently seen in children and is very contagious.
Shallots: Swelling in the eyelid. It is the swelling that occurs when bacteria on your skin enter the hair follicle of the eyelash.
Other types of eye infection are:
Blepharitis: Lubrication of the lash bottoms. It itches intensely.
Orbital Cellulite: Bacterial infection infects the tissues around the eyes and can cause permanent problems.
Keratitis: This is a corneal infection. May be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites in water. It is a common problem for people wearing contact lenses.
Dacryocystitis: A type of infection that occurs in the tear duct.
SYMPTOMS OF EYE INFECTION
When you have an infection, you may have symptoms in one or two eyes. These:
- Pain or discomfort
- Itchy eye
- Light sensitivity
- Burning in the eyes
- An accumulation of sticky secretion under your eyelid or under the lashes
- An uncomfortable stinging sensation
- Irrigation in the eyes
- Eye irritation
CAUSES OF EYE INFECTION
There are several causes of eye infection:
- Viruses
- Bacteria (eg gonorrhea or chlamydia)
- Irritants such as shampoos, dirt, smoke and pool chlorine
- Allergens such as allergies that affect dust, pollen or some contact lens wearers
- Eye infection from some bacteria and viruses can easily spread from person to person, but does not pose a serious health risk if diagnosed immediately. However, the redness of the eyes in newborn babies may be a vision-impaired infection, so a doctor should be urgently consulted.
EYE INFECTION TREATMENT
Treatment of eye infection varies according to the cause of the infection. If you have an eye infection with an allergic cause, the most common bacterial eye infections, especially prescription antibiotic eye drops, ointments or compresses, such as rapid treatment is cleared.
Many common viral eye infections resolve spontaneously. In severe viral eye infections, an antiviral eye drop can be made. Some viral eye infections require careful steroid eye drops to reduce the associated inflammation.
Your doctor may also prescribe oral antibiotics or antiviral drugs, depending on the underlying cause of your eye infection.
If you have an infection due to dry eye, you can moisten your eyes with artificial tears. If the treatment of eye infection is late or if the patient is not present regularly, the condition becomes serious and a surgical procedure is necessary. If an eye corneal staining occurs, it is treated with laser or a new corneal transplant is performed.
