Vaginal yeast infection is common in 75 percent of women and can occur at any age. The most common microorganism causing vaginal yeast infection is a yeast cell called ida candida albicans.. Avrasya Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op. Dr. Gamze Baykan shares her knowledge with us.

Symptoms of vaginal fungus
The most common symptom of vaginal yeast infection is vaginal itching and burning. Redness, swelling in the genital area, pain and burning during sexual intercourse, burning in the area where the urine touches while urinating are other symptoms of vaginal yeast infection. Itching causes skin peeling and irritation. It is also a symptom of vaginal fungus in a stream like odorless and white milk cut.

What are the causes of vaginal fungus?
Disruption of the living balance of the intrauterine environment causes vaginal fungus. The bacteria called ”lactobacilli korum protect the vaginal area from fungus. If, for any reason, the lactobacilli environment becomes unstable or diminished, other bacteria and fungi immediately multiply and cause infection. Lactobacilli, which protects the genital area, decrease and cause fungal growth in cases such as diabetes, birth control pills, frequent swimming in the pool, lack of hygiene, standing with wet swimsuit. Lactobacilli are normally present in this region but cannot grow. Except those;
Disruption of the immune system,
Use of nylon underwear,
Pregnancy,
Continuous use of sanitary napkins,
Spiral protection,
Use of perfumed condoms,
Sexual organ perfumes,
Some toilet paper,
Use of vaginal tampons,
Obesity,
AIDS,
Cervical wounds,
Intense stress,
Cortisone type drug use,
Frequent sexual intercourse
Causes such as vaginal yeast infection.

Diagnosis of vaginal yeast infection

Vaginal examination is sufficient for diagnosis. The presence of fungal plaques in the vagina by the physician and the patient's complaints are sufficient for diagnosis. Peeling and small bleeding may occur on the vulva skin due to scratching, which is evaluated by the doctor. Occasionally, the smear test may show fungal cells, although the patient has no obvious complaints.

Vaginal fungal treatment

Vaginal fungal treatment is easy in some places and very difficult in some places. Acute complaints can be remedied to a great extent by treatment and it is seen that 20% of the patients recur. Infection is treated with vaginal suppositories, creams and in some cases oral medications. With the medications taken, the patient decreases complaints within a few days.
The chronic disease causes fungal yeasts to penetrate into the intact tissues of the vagina, to go deep and remain silent there. This situation causes the drugs to be accepted as not affecting the disease. Vagina cells can constantly renew itself.

In order to prevent the formation of vaginal fungus and eliminate the fungal infection that occurs, it is necessary to do so in addition to medication:
Make sure that the genital area is not wet,
Do not use cosmetic products for genital area cleaning,
Take care to wear cotton underwear,
Perform genital cleansing only with soaps produced for the vaginal region,
In summer, do not dry the wet jersey. Change your bathing suit after sea or pool,
Be sure to take a shower after the pool and remove chlorinated water.

Probiotics play an important role in treatment

Probiotics are very important in the prevention and treatment of vaginal infections. Vaginal infections can be treated with oral medications, so probiotics can be administered effectively to avoid frequent recurrence of infections.
In probiotic supplements, vitality and resistance to gastric acid are important. The issue of vitality is very important because probiotics stored and transported in poor conditions do not have viable bacteria and do not benefit when drunk.

What can be done to protect against vaginal fungus?

Cotton underwear should be used and plenty of clothes should be preferred. It is absolutely necessary to wash and ironing the underwear separately with high temperature. The use of perfumed washing gels, hygienic pads, perfumed condoms and buffers applied to the genital area is irritant and facilitates fungal formation with an allergic effect. It is wrong to wash the inside of the vagina with soap or hand. For this reason, it is sufficient to clean the outer genital area from front to back with perfume-free genital intim gels and water available from the pharmacy. Unhygienic toilet and pool should be avoided, long-term wet swimsuit should not be expected. The fungus always likes moist and wet environments.

Persons with vaginal discharge should definitely have a gynecological examination. These streams may be due to bacterial “gardnerella vaginitis” or parasitic ik trichomonas ”infection or fungal infections such as chlamydia, mycoplasma and ureoplasma. Other than infection, cervical sores may occur. In this case, smear test must be done. Medications taken directly from the pharmacy without examination should not be used.
